What would you do to make your 100th birthday memorable? At Pastoe, one of the Netherlands most renowned design labels, they have it all figured out: 1 sizeable exhibition, 1 matching and fully illustrated Dutch and English publication and a few amazing jubilee designs! It all starts on the 23rd of February with the opening of ‘LIKE PASTOE – 100 years of design innovation’ at museum Kunsthal in Rotterdam. The Dutch version of the book, which carries the same title as the exhibition, will be presented then. International fans will have to wait until the 13th of April, when the English edition will be on display at the Salone del Mobile in Milan.

The exhibition

The exhibition will be set up around 3 themes: archives, environments and propositions. Rather than just showing a few famous products, Pastoe has chosen to put together a presentation in which designs are placed into a historical or modern context. Artists and designers will share stories, ideas and visions. Visitors will be invited to experience environments, encouraged to (re)think about the way they live, work, learn and create.

In ‘Propositions’ Pastoe uncovers the process of development. Among others, the designer Naoto Fukasawa has contributed his view on renewal and next generation designs. His shelf-system in the most minimalistic form (photo) combines multiple qualities that define Pastoe furniture. It has strong lines, takes minimal space to create space and can be adapted to different situations.

The book

The book can be seen as separate from the exhibition, but also contains views on the history of Pastoe (theme: archives), the current position and the future of the brand (environments & propositions), both national and international. It offers a lot of background information in stories and interviews, such as reflections on the developments in the 1950’s and 1960’s. When, due to shortages after the war, designers had to work with limited materials and were forced to create functional designs that could be used in small livings. Well known and appreciated for their practical designs, Pastoe has kept characteristics like flexibility, suitability and subtlety part of their design philosophy. Their aim is to bring designs that are unobtrusive, yet still able to transform and give structure to their surroundings.

LIKE PASTOE – international

The English version of the book will be presented during the Salone del Mobile in Milan. It is not yet certain if the exhibition will travel, but there has been some interest. Pastoe has approached the Design Museum in Ghent, the Vitra Design Museum and the Design Museum in Copenhagen. For up-to-date news, please visit the websites of these museums or Pastoe.com.
